The opportunity

A fast-growing consumer privacy technology company is hiring its first General Counsel to build and lead the legal function. The company helps individuals and businesses get their personal information taken down from data broker listings. It is a mission driven team with a real voice in the push for consumer data rights.

You would be the senior legal voice in the business, advising the CEO, the board and the leadership team, and bringing in outside counsel for most specialist work.

The shape of the work

  • Advise the CEO, the board and the leadership team on legal, regulatory and risk questions.
  • Negotiate and manage commercial agreements, from B2B software contracts to vendor and partner deals, and build the processes to handle growing volume.
  • Lead data privacy and regulatory compliance across the business.
  • Push data brokers that ignore removal requests: engage them directly, build constructive relationships with state privacy regulators and attorneys general, and gather the evidence needed to file complaints.
  • Handle corporate governance, board paperwork and the equity plan.
  • Back funding rounds, debt and equity deals, and any future M&A.
  • Advise on employment, intellectual property and risk, and manage the outside law firms.
  • Set up internal legal policies and, over time, hire and lead a legal team.

What we are looking for

  • Eight to fifteen years of legal experience, split between a leading law firm and in house counsel work for a tech or privacy business.
  • Deep knowledge of US consumer privacy law and how state regulators enforce it. Familiarity with the main state privacy statutes is a strong plus.
  • Experience working with regulators such as state privacy agencies, attorneys general or the FTC.
  • Solid grounding in commercial contracting and corporate governance, plus experience with how startups raise money through equity or debt.
  • A clear communicator and negotiator who prefers action and pragmatism.
  • Genuine motivation to protect consumer privacy and hold data brokers to the law.
  • Licensed to practice law in the US. California is preferred but not required.

Why this role

  • Shape the legal strategy of a financially healthy, fast-growing privacy and security company.
  • Help enforce consumer privacy laws as they spread across the US and abroad.
  • Work side by side with the CEO, the technical and commercial leaders and the board.
  • Influence how the industry approaches data broker compliance.
